The Cat Cave IS Coming

We, the Chaos Crew, are proud to announce that our new headquarters is officially underway.

It’s called The Cat Cave. Yes, like a man cave, except better and full of whiskers.

We secured a used shed after hours of intense imaginary feline deliberation, with one very serious goal in mind: a warm, reliable shelter for winter nights. Inside, we’re getting a generous 288 square feet dedicated to play, food consumption, strategic naps, and evening zoomies, all bundled into one big cozy space, along with a front porch for proper loaf-mode supervision and general property oversight. The exterior is bright white, which we believe adds exactly the kind of polished, executive-level flair this operation deserves.

Life Before the Cat Cave

Because there are simply too many cats in the house all the time. We love being inside. The humans love us being inside too… just perhaps not all of us, all the time, in every single room at once.

At the same time, Can Man is perpetually worried about us being cold at night, even though shelters are everywhere and refreshed with straw weekly. Worry is his love language. Between overcrowding indoors and his ongoing concern for nighttime comfort, it became clear that we needed a better system altogether. The Cat Cave is the solution for both problems.

The Cat Cave will give us a warm place to sleep at night, a safe and consistent feeding station, a real space to play and decompress, a quieter retreat away from indoor chaos, and a way to spread cats out so everyone doesn’t have to live entirely inside the main house at all times. We will install cat doors so approved feline traffic can move between safe areas without creating door-dashing disasters.

And speaking of door dashing… we must now address the elephant-cat in the room.

Alongside the Cat Cave plans, the humans are screening the house porch.. The house porch, not the Cat Cave porch. This is being done primarily because of Cole, who treats open doors as personal invitations to go exploring whether anyone asked him or not.

Cole darts for open doors like his life depends on it. Due to his hip issues, he is not allowed outside at all, and the screened porch is being added specifically as a safety airlock to prevent him from slipping out during door openings. It creates a buffer zone that keeps adventurous cats contained and medically vulnerable cats protected.

Some of us adore hanging out on the open porch and will be deeply disappointed to lose unrestricted access once it’s screened, but this change works together with the Cat Cave to create safer, more manageable living space overall. It keeps escape artists inside where they belong, reduces overcrowding in the house, improves daily cat flow between secured areas, and gives Can Man some peace of mind knowing the humans can open doors without performing obstacle courses through a moving wall of whiskers and tripping hazards. After all, they are not exactly spring chickens, and broken hips are frowned upon in this household.

What the Cat Cave Will Provide

Now for the practical numbers. The shed itself is $6,300, and finishing out the interior with insulation, ceiling, walls, and electrical work is expected to cost another $3,000 to $4,000.

This is a huge expense, but it’s one that directly improves safety, comfort, and daily operations for the cats who call this place home. This isn’t a glamour project or decorative upgrade, it’s an investment in warmth, space, safety, and sanity.

The Cat Cave will become our new base of operations, built for chaos, cuddles, recovery time, play sessions, and endless food bowl rotations.

Delivery was scheduled for Monday, December 8, but due to rain and soft ground, is currently rescheduled for Friday, December 12, pending dry soil. Interior work is expected to begin quickly as we start bringing the Cat Cave to life.

We are already mentally moved in.

A Note from the Humans

While the Chaos Crew provides commentary and supervision, the humans are knee-deep in real-world logistics. If anyone would like to help bring the Cat Cave together, we’ve added Lowe’s gift cards to our wishlist to assist with the building supplies needed for the interior finish-out.

Supplies we’re currently sourcing include:

We would also gratefully welcome skilled labor donations if anyone has experience with:

  • Installing insulation and drywall
  • Mudding and finishing drywall

Whether through supplies, skills, or support, every contribution helps turn the Cat Cave into a warm, safe space for the cats this winter.
